In 1779 Francisco Bouligny led the Malaguenos settlers up Bayou Teche to their future home in New Iberia. After a failed settlement attempt in the Spring of 1779 on the right bank of Bayou Teche due to flooding from heavy rains, Mr. Bouligny abandoned this site for New Iberia and moved his settlers upriver seven to eight leagues where he purchased new lands, thirty aprents by eight in size, for four hundred pesos from François Prévost, dit Colete (Mr. Colete).
