Lula Mae Lacouture worked in the grocery store and raised the children in the warehouse of the store. The family was in Texas City, TX when the major disaster occurred (ship of fertilizer exploded). About 1951 they were able to move to a new home in La Marque, Galveston County, TX and life became a little more normal for the family. She became a fulltime, great cook and a ‘taxi’ for the boys13.
