Notes for François Mathurin (Spouse 1)
On 2 Aug 1876 François Clotiaux submitted an application in Lafayette Parish, LA for naturalization as a United States citizen. In the application François Clotiaux stated that he was born 16 Nov 1840 at La Frennay, Department of Ille-et-Vilaine, France and emigrated to New York, NY on 14 Nov 1854. He then sailed aboard the American ship “William Tell” as a sailor to New Orleans, LA. He remained in New Orleans from the Spring of 18583008,3230,3231,3218.

Aunt Lizzie Clotiaux Herpin told me that François Mathurin Clotiaux came to America when he was only seventeen (17) years old and that he started the Clotiaux family line here3044.

Aunt Edmae Clotiaux Broussard of Estherwood, Acadia Parish, LA told me that François Mathurin Clotiaux came to America in about 1855 when he was fourteen (14) years old. He came on the boat “Galliot Français”. In March 1977 Edmae Clotiaux Broussard showed me two letters written to François Mathurin Clotiaux by his mother Marie David. In these letters she asks François Mathurin Clotiaux why he left home without telling anyone and why has he not told anyone where he is. She also relates news of the family in France to him and asks him to let them know how he is. Aunt Edmae Clotiaux Broussard also has some photographs of the area of France (Bretagne region near the rural areas of La Fresnais) from where François Mathurin Clotiaux came. Aunt Edmae Clotiaux Broussard showed me a genealogy of the Clotiaux family in France done by Mr. Murry Joseph La Pigonire of La Fresnais, Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France. Mr. La Pigonire indicated that François Mathurin Clotiaux (husband of Marie David) was a seaman (‘marin’) by trade and that Joseph Larchet (husband of Jeanne Marie Clotiaux) was a carpenter (‘menuisier’) by trade3223.

François Mathurin Clotiaux received a letter dated 20 May 1877 from his mother in France informing him of the consequences of his returning home (possibly 30 years of punishment). Additional bad news was that his brother Joseph had four boys - all of whom had died and his sister Marie had six girls - of whom three had died13.

François Mathurin Clotiaux received a letter dated 6 Dec 1883 from his sister Marie (married to Julie Lemonier) and living in La Fresnais, France. The letter mentioned his brother Joseph and wife Perrine. The letter was signed by his nieces Marie and Basile Lemonier13.

    ____________________

In April 1888 the will of François Mathurin Clotiaux’s mother Marie Madeline Françoise David was executed. The inheritance of François Matherin Clotiaux was 900 francs13.

François Mathurin Clotiaux left France in 1857 from Le Havre. He arrived in Louisiana in 1858. On 4 September 1876 François Mathurin Clotiaux registered to vote and listed his occupation as farmer. In January 1881 he was discharged from the military. In March 1888 his mother Marie Madeline Françoise David died in France13.
